Jon's Health

It was a rough winter for Jon.  It started in early December with some tightness and swelling in his hand.  A few days later he woke up with his entire right arm extremely swollen and red.  It was so large he could not get a sweatshirt on.  It was shocking.  He ended up going to the Emergency Room twice that week and after lots of blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds, etc.  They found he had a strain of blood clots running from his neck down through is right arm, as well as clots in both lungs.  He was put on blood thinners immediately, but they were not working quick enough.  He then had a procedure done at the hospital where they directly inserted strong blood thinners into his arm through a catheter.  He was in the hospital with this med drip for two days.  The doctor then went in microscopically and broke up the remainder of the clots.  So, he is now clot free!

During all this we learned he has Paget Schroetter Syndrome, which in short was caused from playing lots of tennis.  In order to prevent the clots from returning he had to have a second hospital visit and procedure to remove his upper right rib.  It was all a huge shock and lots of stress during December and January.   We are very happy he is now healthy and has fully recovered!

Covid Update

There's never a dull moment when living through a pandemic.  During December covid numbers started improving and luckily, we were able to see family over the holidays.  Then January and the omicron variant hit.  Numbers were higher than ever.  My work was hit hard, we closed briefly.  Many kids got Covid and 14 of our 17 teachers have now been infected.  I have somehow survived thus far.  We switched to everyone wearing KN95 masks and somehow made it through January and February very short staffed.

Numbers are improving as the omicron wave has peaked.  They just released the mask mandate for outdoors in Washington.  And are planning to release masks indoor on March 21st.  I have mixed emotions about this decision.  I would love for the kids and I to stop wearing masks all day at school and work, however it feels like we will likely then be needing to test for covid weekly as we will be getting sick for sure.  I'm curious to see if safety protocols for school will change.  As of now public schools require a lab test (home tests are not allowed) to return to school if they show any signs of being sick.  My kids refuse to have these painful lab PCR tests done anymore, and I don' blame them.

I'm looking forward to the spring for some sun and more outdoor time.

Winter Hikes

Party of 5

It wasn't love at first sight for most of us, but I can happily say that Bolt is well loved by all four members of our family.  Colbie loved him from day 1 and continues to love him the most, he brings her so much joy and she tells him this daily.  Ash was a quick second to love the dog and wants to hug him anytime he's feeling sad.  This dog is still a lot of work.... We can't put anything on the floor without him snagging it, does not like to give back anything he steals, we have to keep bedroom doors closed at all times, he especially enjoys getting any laundry, stuffed animals, and slippers.  He attacks any guests we have over (with over excitement).  He recently got kicked out of doggy daycare for herding the other dogs and then biting at the humans when they try to get him to stop.  He is no dream dog, but he is our dog and is definitely a part of the family.

So much snow!!

We got about 8 inches of snow and the kids, and dog were thrilled!!  It was very cold, but also sunny which is rare for Seattle.  The best part was that it was over Christmas Break, so we did not have to deal with school, work issues!
