Ashton's Birth Story

Feel free to skip this post.

On Friday January 24th at 1:30am I woke up in a lot of pain.  It didn't take me long to realize I was definitely in labor, just three days before my induction date (an earlier ultrasound showed the baby being 9 pounds a week prior).  I was so done with pregnancy and was more than ready for him to arrive!

I knew we had to go to the hospital quick, my labor with Colbie went quickly and they warned me that the second would be even quicker.  Jon called Gloria, who was at our house in 10 min, in the middle of the night, a true life savor.  Without her we would have had to take Colbie with us to the hospital which would have been very traumatic for her as I was in so much pain.  Thank you so much Gloria for staying up all night to be with Colbie until my mom arrived.  My mom left her house at 2am and made it to our house around 5.  Colbie happily woke up to Grandma and the news that baby Ashton was finally coming.  Thanks Mom!

I was dilated to a five when we got to the hospital and my contractions were extremely close together.  Luckily we were the only ones being admitted and I was able to get the epidural promptly after arriving at the hospital.  The intensity of my contractions was causing Ashton's heart rate to drop so they had me move positions often and gave me fluids to slow down my contractions.   After increasing the dose of the epidural and slowing my contractions down I was much more comfortable.

I was Strep B positive so I needed antibiotics in my system for at least four hours before giving birth,  I had to wait to push for some time.  My doctor rushed into the hospital in time, which was great!  I was having terrible back labor which led them to  realize Ashton was "sunny side up", which makes for a longer/harder delivery.  They moved me in all these strange/uncomfortable positions (which I had to do with Colbie also).  It worked and he changed positions.  I pushed for about 1.5 hours.  When he arrived the cord was wrapped around his neck, but thankfully it didn't cause any problems.  After 7 hours of labor I was blessed with an adorable, chunky baby boy!  I cried and was so happy to hold him right away for hours (which I missed out on with Colbie).  I loved him the second I saw him and love him more and more each day.  We are so happy to have you in the world Ashton, you are the perfect fit to our family!
